Running from September 8 to December 18, 2026, MoMo Hour will feature reward windows announced in advance through customer alerts. Customers who complete a qualifying transaction on the MoMo App during a live window will be eligible for the relevant reward, subject to the campaign terms and conditions.

Qualifying transactions will vary per reward window and may include airtime and data purchases; person-to-person transfers; MoMoPay and merchant payments; bill payments for television, electricity, water and school fees; and payments for insurance, savings, investments, pensions and loan repayments.

Depending on the live offer, rewards may include e-cash, data bundles of up to 1GB, 20 minutes of voice airtime, discounted transaction fees and other benefits. Customers will also have the opportunity to compete for monthly cash prizes, including a top prize of GH¢5,000.

MoMo Hour forms part of MMFL’s broader drive to increase adoption and active use of the MoMo App. The campaign will enable customers to experience a more intuitive way to manage everyday transactions and access a wider range of financial services in one place.

Commenting on the campaign, Alfred Hammond, Head of Marketing at MobileMoney Fintech LTD, said MoMo Hour combines immediate customer value with MMFL’s ambition to widen access to digital financial services.

“The MoMo App is more than a channel for transferring money. It gives customers secure, convenient access to payments, savings, credit, insurance, pensions and investments in one place. More than one million customers already use advanced financial services through *170# but have not yet opened the app. MoMo Hour gives them a compelling reason to start: transact during a reward window, discover what else the app can do and earn rewards along the way,” he said.

He encouraged customers to download or update the MoMo App, watch out for official MoMo Hour alerts and complete qualifying transactions during the announced windows. Existing users are also encouraged to explore the app’s wider range of financial and lifestyle services.

MoMo Hour is the first in a series of initiatives to deepen MoMo App adoption and engagement. Planned activities include Hourly Streaks for repeat participants, a MoMoFest takeover and a Mega Hour finale in December.

The MoMo App is a one-stop platform for financial and lifestyle services, including money transfers, airtime and data purchases, bill and merchant payments, savings, investments, insurance, pensions, loans, bank services, QR payments, loyalty rewards and self-service options. It is available on the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, Palm Store and Huawei AppGallery. The campaign is being run in partnership with the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

ACCRA, Ghana — Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to parents and the Ghanaian public to give him one more year to address longstanding challenges affecting the Senior High School placement system.

Iddrisu made the appeal on July 20, 2026, during the Government Accountability Series, where he acknowledged persistent concerns surrounding the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

“You may have to give me another year, then I’ll be better off in resolving the school placement issues,” the Minister said.

Minister Admits Placement Challenges

Haruna Iddrisu attributed some of the difficulties to inadequate infrastructure and growing demand for senior high school education.

He acknowledged that government had not yet had sufficient resources to completely address the pressure on the system and said additional classroom infrastructure would be necessary to provide a lasting solution.

The Minister also disclosed that a committee had been established to review the placement system and examine whether the process sufficiently protects merit and transparency.

Reforms Proposed for CSSPS

Iddrisu said government intended to introduce a more open and transparent placement process in which candidates would know their BECE results before selecting their preferred senior high schools.

The proposed approach was intended to allow students and parents to make more informed choices based on candidates’ actual academic performance.

The Minister also stressed that the release of BECE results remained the responsibility of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and said he would not interfere with the work of the examination body.

One Year Later, Placement Problems Remain a Major Issue

The Minister’s July appeal has gained renewed relevance as Ghana’s 2026/2027 SHS placement exercise continues to generate concerns.

Parents and prospective SHS students have been reporting difficulties with the CSSPS process, with large numbers of affected families seeking assistance at resolution centres.

Reports from Accra and Kumasi have documented long queues and frustration among parents and candidates attempting to resolve placement problems.

Government Tightens Control Over Admissions

Amid the concerns, the Education Minister has directed heads of Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools and Technical and Vocational Institutes not to admit students outside the approved CSSPS process.

Heads of institutions who admit students outside the system risk sanctions under the applicable regulations and professional code of ethics.

The directive is intended to strengthen fairness, transparency and accountability in the placement and enrolment process.

The Bigger Challenge: Capacity

At the heart of Ghana’s placement difficulties is the growing demand for second-cycle education and the limited capacity of some schools.

The government has been pursuing infrastructure interventions intended to expand capacity and reduce pressure on the existing system.

The issue is also connected to the wider debate over Ghana’s double-track system and efforts to provide sufficient classroom space for students following the expansion of access to secondary education.

GPHA CLARIFIES CEMENT PRICE INCREASE ATTRIBUTION TO PORT CONGESTION

The Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (GPHA) wishes to clarify that port congestion alone is not sufficient justification for an increase in cement prices, as several operational and commercial factors determine the cost of bringing clinker and cement through the Port of Tema.

GPHA has taken note of the press release issued by the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG) attributing the recent increase in cement prices to congestion at the Port of Tema.

The Port Authority has a responsibility to serve all users of the Port of Tema and to ensure that port operations are conducted in a safe and hygienic environment. In particular, the handling of food-related cargo such as rice and wheat must be properly separated from cement and clinker operations. This consideration is critical in determining the allocation and use of berths.

In anticipation of increasing vessel sizes, cargo volumes and vessel drafts, GPHA undertook strategic dredging of the section of the Port dedicated to bulk cargo operations, including clinker and cement. The cement companies were informed in advance about the project, its duration and the need to plan their vessel arrivals and berthing schedules accordingly.

The cement industry is also a direct beneficiary of the recently completed dredging works. Berth 13 now provides depths of up to 14 metres, while Berth 14 provides up to 12 metres, creating an opportunity for cement companies to receive larger vessels and benefit from economies of scale, which could potentially help reduce unit logistics costs.

Terminals 1 and 2 of the Port of Tema are multipurpose terminals, handling a variety of cargo, including food products, steel and other general cargo. For hygiene, safety and environmental reasons, the handling of cement and clinker cannot be mingled with food-related cargo.

To facilitate cement and clinker operations, Berths 3, 13 and 14 have been strategically designated as common-user berths for such cargo. These berths are shared among several cement companies and, therefore, cannot be dedicated exclusively to one importer.

It is also important to note that cement and clinker-related cargo are handled at the Port of Takoradi, providing an additional port option within Ghana’s maritime logistics network. Cement manufacturers are therefore encouraged to consider the most efficient combination of ports, vessel sizes, discharge arrangements and inland transportation when planning their operations.

GPHA also notes that the efficiency of cargo evacuation remains critical. A vessel carrying approximately 40,000 tonnes of clinker may rely on a limited number of trucks to transport the cargo to factories located outside the port. Where trucks are inadequate or delayed by traffic, discharge operations are slowed, resulting in vessels occupying berths for extended periods-sometimes seven to days.

Such prolonged berth occupancy affects the availability of berths for other vessels and places additional pressure on port operations.

Modernising Cement Handling

GPHA is also in the process of modernising the handling of cement and clinker at the Port of Tema. The Authority is working towards more efficient and modern cargo-handling systems, under which the traditional reliance on grabs and hoppers will become a thing of the past.

We therefore entreat all cement companies to embrace and invest in the new handling technology as it is introduced. The adoption of more efficient handling systems will improve discharge rates, reduce vessel turnaround times, optimise berth utilisation and ultimately contribute to a more efficient and competitive port operation.

GPHA therefore stresses that port efficiency is a shared responsibility, requiring proper vessel planning, adequate trucking capacity, efficient discharge, adoption of modern handling technology and timely evacuation of cargo.

The Authority accordingly encourages stakeholders and the public to consider the entire logistics and supply chain, including vessel planning, discharge efficiency, trucking, factory location, port choice and other commercial cost factors, rather than attributing cement price increases solely to port congestion.

GHA remains committed to working with the cement industry and all stakeholders to improve berth utilisation, cargo evacuation and the overall efficiency of Ghana’s ports.

Samba Foods Returns to Profit, Records GH¢1.62m Income in 2025

Ghanaian-owned food processing company Samba Foods Limited has reported a significant improvement in its financial and operational performance for the 2025 fiscal year, recording a net profit after tax of approximately GH¢265,000 after posting a loss of about GH¢245,000 in 2024.

The company disclosed the results at the “Facts Behind the Figures” forum organised by the Ghana Stock Exchange in Accra on September 9, 2026, where its Managing Director, Dr. Mrs. Leticia Osafo-Addo, and members of her executive team presented the company’s performance to the press, brokers and representatives of institutional investors.

According to the company, total income more than doubled from the previous year to approximately GH¢1.62 million in 2025, while its gross-profit margin increased sharply from about 7 per cent to 42 per cent.

Operationally, Samba Foods also produced approximately 11 million sachets under the Unifa arrangement, further reflecting the improvement in its business operations during the year.

Cautious about turnaround

Despite the improved financial results, management cautioned against viewing the 2025 performance as a complete turnaround of the company.

It said the key issue going forward would be whether Samba Foods could sustain the improved performance, reduce vulnerabilities and create a broader platform for growth.

Management described the 2025 results as a substantial operational recovery but emphasised that achieving profitability in a single year was not sufficient to establish a sustained turnaround.

The company said stakeholders, investors and the public would receive further updates and relevant details as preparations for post-presentation documentation were completed.

Ghanaian food-processing company

Samba Foods Limited is a Ghanaian-owned food processing and preservation company based in Tema and specialises in the condiments and seasoning market.

Incorporated in 1993, the company commenced operations in the same year and was listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange Alternative Market in 2015.

It has developed and produced ready-to-eat convenience foods of Ghanaian origin and became the first company to commercialise the production and distribution of the traditional local pepper sauce known as SHITO.

According to a statement published by A-Plus, the delegation, headed by the Chief Executive Officer of AKA Energy Systems, formally briefed President Mahama on plans to develop the solar project to provide power for the Gomoa Special Economic Zone and the Gomoa Eco Park.

The Gomoa Special Economic Zone is being positioned as a major manufacturing, industrial and commercial hub, while the planned renewable-energy facility is expected to provide dedicated power support for the development.

270MW Solar Project to Be Developed in Phases

A-Plus said preparations have begun toward construction of the 270MW facility, which will be developed in phases.

The delegation assured President Mahama that Phase One is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The announcement represents another step in the development of the proposed project, following an earlier Letter of Intent and Memorandum of Understanding between the Gomoa Special Economic Zone and Canada-based AKA Energy Systems.

Madilo suggested that day students could report to school earlier in the day, while boarding students could attend classes in the afternoon.

His proposal was highlighted by GHOne TV in a News Alert published on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

“Instead of the double-track system, we can let day students go to class earlier, and boarders can go in the afternoon.”

The proposal comes amid ongoing government efforts to end the double-track system, which was introduced to address capacity challenges following the expansion of Free Senior High School education.

What Madilo Is Proposing

Madilo’s suggestion effectively introduces an “anopa ne awia” — morning and afternoon — model in which different categories of students would use school facilities at different times.

Under the proposal, day students could begin lessons earlier, while boarding students would attend during a later session. The approach is presented as a possible way of increasing the use of existing classroom infrastructure without maintaining the traditional double-track arrangement.

The proposal has emerged at a time when government is investing heavily in infrastructure and other measures intended to increase capacity across Ghana’s secondary schools.

Government Plans to End Double Track

The government has announced plans to phase out the double-track system as additional infrastructure becomes available.

In May 2026, President John Dramani Mahama said government intended to phase out the system by 2027. The Ghana News Agency reported that the programme was designed to address congestion and allow students to attend school at the same time.

The Information Services Department had earlier reported a government target of completely abolishing the double-track system by the end of 2026 through the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Project.

More recently, the Ghana News Agency reported in August that government was investing GH¢3 billion in secondary education under the Strategic Secondary Education Transformation and Reform for Jobs (STARR-J) project, with the elimination of double track among its objectives.

Why the Proposal Matters

The debate over the future of double track centres on how Ghana can accommodate growing demand for senior high school education while ensuring adequate classroom space, teacher contact hours and quality learning conditions.

Madilo’s proposal adds another option to the national conversation: making greater use of existing facilities through staggered daily schedules rather than having students alternate through separate tracks.

Whether such a model would be practical across different schools would depend on factors including classroom capacity, teacher availability, transportation, boarding arrangements, feeding and school operating hours.

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Dr Martin Muduva has died after allegedly being attacked with an axe during a suspected domestic dispute in Dzivarasekwa Extension, Harare.

Muduva reportedly succumbed to his injuries at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026, after being admitted following the incident on Tuesday night.

According to reports, Muduva was allegedly struck twice with an axe. His wife was also taken to hospital and reportedly died after allegedly ingesting poison.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet released a comprehensive account of what led to the incident.

ZHRC Confirms Commissioner’s Death

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission confirmed the deaths of Dr Muduva and his wife, describing the loss as an “untimely passing” and expressing condolences to their children, relatives, friends and loved ones.

Muduva was appointed as a commissioner of the ZHRC on December 19, 2024. The Commission said he made significant contributions to its work, particularly in connecting human rights with technology.

His professional background included expertise in cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and technology risk. He also served as a lecturer at Midlands State University.

Police Investigation Underway

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Details of the alleged domestic dispute remain limited as authorities work to establish exactly what happened inside the couple’s home.

The tragedy comes as Zimbabwe continues to confront concerns surrounding domestic violence and the devastating consequences that can follow unresolved disputes within households.
